</p><p>Roman studierte an der <a href="University_of_California%2C_Los_Angeles" title="University of California, Los Angeles">University of California, Los Angeles</a>, mit dem Bachelor-Abschluss und an der <a href="University_of_Washington" title="University of Washington">University of Washington</a>, an der er 1975 bei <a href="Branko_Gr%C3%BCnbaum" title="Branko Grünbaum">Branko Grünbaum</a> promoviert wurde (On a problem of Zarankiewicz concerning matrices of zeros and ones).<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Er war Instructor am <a href="Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology" title="Massachusetts Institute of Technology">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a>, Lecturer an der <a href="University_of_California%2C_Santa_Barbara" title="University of California, Santa Barbara">University of California, Santa Barbara</a>, Assistant Professor an der <a href="University_of_South_Florida" title="University of South Florida">University of South Florida</a> und 1980 bis zur Emeritierung 1999 Professor an der <a href="California_State_University%2C_Fullerton" title="California State University, Fullerton">California State University, Fullerton</a>.
